Music for Schools

Welcome to the Music for Schools Foundation!  We are passionate about encouraging children to learn an instrument and have been teaching in primary schools for over 20 years. This year, probably more than any other, has shown us all the importance of keeping children engaged in fun, rewarding activities and playing a musical instrument is great for their personal development.

We currently have opportunities for new pupils to join our scheme. Depending on your child’s school, these lessons will either take place during the school day or online at home via Zoom. We will confirm the specific arrangements once we have received your completed registration.

What Instrument Can My Child Learn?

A range of instruments are taught through our scheme, your child may choose from one of the following:

  • Clarinet
  • Cornet
  • Flute
  • Trumpet
  • Alto Saxophone
  • Recorder

Our scheme is specifically designed for children aged 7-11 years old (Key Stage 2), learning in a small group environment. However, for those slightly younger who are keen to learn we can offer the Recorder from Year 2. To learn more about our lessons and how they are structured please see our Lessons page.

How Much Does It Cost To Join The Scheme?

The Music for Schools Foundation provide the teaching element of the scheme and are supported by Normans Musical Instruments who offer instrument packages.

Lesson Prices
If you take advantage of one of the Normans instrument packages they will subsidise your child’s lessons making the first 10 just £3.75 each*.  Going forward, lessons are £37.50 per block of 5 and payment is made every 2 months via Direct Debit.  If you already have an instrument your child can use, you simply pay our standard charge of £7.50 per lesson.  For full information on the lesson charges please see our Fees page.

*unfortunately we are not able to extend the half price lessons offer to our Recorder pupils.

Instrument Packages
If you don’t have access to an instrument then Normans offer packages that include everything you need to get started with no long-term commitment. Click the links below to find out more.

Rental Option - the ideal choice for parents wanting to give their child the opportunity to start lessons without the need for a large upfront payment.

Purchase Option - for parents who would prefer to pay up-front with a ‘safety net’ just in case their child decides that the chosen instrument is not for them.

Recorder Lessons- this year we have put together a recorder package for any Year 2 pupils wishing to start our recorder lessons. It includes everything your child needs to get started for under £20!

How Do I Enrol?

If you’d like your child to join the scheme we’d be delighted to have them on board and help them begin their musical journey.  Please visit our Enrol My Child page, select your preferred option and follow the links to the Registration form.

** Free Lessons & Rental Pre-Christmas **
We're currently offering FREE starter lessons for any pupils we can schedule before Christmas. The sooner you enrol, the more lessons we should be able to arrange!

Normans are also delaying the first payment for anyone wishing to rent/hire an instrument so there will be nothing to pay until January 2021.
