Opportunities within Music for Schools Foundation
A typical MfSF tutor:
- Comes from a musical background and/or relevant teaching qualifications/teaching experience.
- Has an enthusiastic approach.
- Has a good manner with young children.
- Is reliable and well organised.
- Works flexible hours- to fit around children/other work commitments
- Decides their own weeks of working (provided that they deliver 10 lessons per term).
What we provide for our teachers:
- A tutor-shadow with an existing Foundation tutor.
- One to one training on non-principal instruments (as part of our Professional Development scheme- free to MfSF tutors)
- Group training sessions.
- Associated Board examinations on non-principal instruments.
- Full administrative support.
What if I don’t have an official teaching qualification?
A teaching qualification is not essential. Some of our teachers do not have a teaching qualification but it is their enthusiasm for music and ability to communicate with children that makes them a good teacher. We are happy to help people get into music and achieve their full musical potential.
Where do our teachers work?
Cheshire, Essex, Herts, Kent, Oxon, Leics, Notts, Derbys, Staffs, Wilts are just a few areas where we teach. We also provide tuition in many other areas of England and Wales. Please contact us for details of vacancies in your area.

TUTOR PROFILE
NAME: Beverley Prankard
PRINCIPAL INSTRUMENT: Flute
MUSICAL INFLUENCES: I like all kinds of music, from classical through to modern. I really enjoy the Big Band music of the 1940's, like Glen Miller.
BEST PART OF BEING A MFSF TUTOR:
Being a peripatetic teacher means I go to lots of different schools and every day is different. You build up a good working relationship with both the schools and the pupils. Also, although we work independently, I have become good friends with other MfSF tutors and a number of us now play in a band together!
BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT: Concerts offer a great sense of achievement; after all the hard work, it finally comes together and you get fantastic reactions from the parents.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MFSF TUTOR:
Lessons vary from the pupil just starting out to preparing pupils for examinations. There's a lot to carry, from instruments to books to an emergency kit! Every day there is an abundance of tall stories, from 'The dog ate to my music' to 'I've lost my instrument'. As with every job there are ups and downs, it's always sad when someone decides to stop. All in all, I really enjoy what I do, it's rewarding and of course, you do get nice long holidays!
ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR NEW TUTORS:
Don't panic! It does get easier! |
