  • Has a good manner with young children.
  • Is reliable and well organised.
  • Works flexible hours- to fit around children/other work commitments

What if I don’t have an official teaching qualification?

A teaching qualification is not essential. Some of our teachers do not have a teaching qualification but it is their enthusiasm for music and ability to communicate with children that makes them a good teacher. We are happy to help people get into music and achieve their full musical potential.

Where do our teachers work?

Cheshire, Essex, Herts, Kent, Oxon, Leics, Notts, Derbys, Staffs, Wilts are just a few areas where we teach. We also provide tuition in many other areas of England and Wales. Please contact us for details of vacancies in your area.

My job as an MFSF tutor

Mrs Steph Kenny

I have been a MFSF tutor for about 4 years and I love it, no that’s an understatement – I am passionate about it!!!!!  I am very lucky to be in a fabulous part of the world and 2 of my schools are little village schools.  These offer that wonderful opportunity to perform in the local church for Easter, Christmas and those all-important leavers services.  Being a small school means I can get to know the staff well and work closely with them on school themes and projects, and more importantly, the younger children see me around so when it comes to them hitting year 3 and wanting to start an instrument I am really familiar with them!

I go from the sublime to the ridiculous - my main school keeps me occupied for one and a half days.  It is in the centre of Malmesbury and in May 2008 we moved from a very run down old school to a fabulous brand new school that houses over 300 children.  A big school raises bigger challenges and it can be hard becoming part of the team.  To start with I was constantly being moved around, there were unannounced trips and activity days that affected my timetable.  I arranged to meet with the head teacher, we discussed his amazingly busy school programme and I now get sent the termly plans so that I can adjust my timetable and work in ‘harmony’ with the school.  By the way, Christmas and Easter at this school are celebrated in Malmesbury Abbey, and it is a wonderful feeling watching your students perform in that environment even if they are only playing the simplest version of Jingle Bells!!! This is a job that makes me feel very privileged.

I started an after school band in the old school that really flourished but after a chance conversation with the most inspiring and enthusiastic music co-coordinator and choir mistress you could hope to meet we launched the Malmesbury Music Academy in September 2009, using the brand new school as our base.  On a Saturday over 120 children, come back into school and play in one of 2 bands, sing in one of two choirs, dance in one of two dance groups, have individual lessons (year 7 and above or from schools where there is no music provision) or take part in a Samba band.  In January we launched our adult choir, which is 40 strong already, and our wind and brass ensembles. We also have our first adult taking 1-1 Sax lessons.  It brings MFSF students from around the area together as well as those that have gone off to secondary school and it has brought us children who didn’t think they could ever make music or be part of it.  I stand at the top of the staircase in school on a Saturday and I can’t quite believe that my little part time teaching job that fitted around my own children has given me all of this.  I guess what I am trying to say is this – do not underestimate the responsibility of this job or the potential, it is there if you want to make it happen.
