How much does it cost to enter for an exam?
Unfortunately, entering your child in for an exam does come with some costs attached.
The cost of the exam is dependent on the Grade you are entering for.
Current fees are:
Prep Test: £29.00
Grade 1: £38.00
Grade 2: £44.00
Grade 3: £48.00
Grade 4: £53.00
Grade 5: £56.00
The fee that MfSF charge includes the Associated Board examination fee, the pianist fee for the day of the exam, and a small administration fee.
You will also be expected to provide original music once the pieces for the exam have been chosen. It might be necessary to buy 3 or 4 additional books, which may cost between £5 and £15 each. Most books will have both instrument and piano parts. However, some books may require the purchase of additional piano music. Where possible, tutors are advised to suggest pieces from the same books in further grades.
Your tutor will advise you which books you need to buy. Ideally books need to be purchased as soon as your exam entry is made, so if you are unsure of what you need, you can either email your tutor or contact us for advice. Books can be ordered from www.normans.co.uk. The use of photocopies is strictly forbidden.
It may also be beneficial for the pupil to purchase recorded piano music, so that they can practice their complete performances at home. As not all tutors play or have access to a piano, these can be very valuable resources. They are available on CD or download via Pocket Pianist, or download via youronlinepianist.
Pre-examination run-throughs with the appointed pianist are offered for each pupil, and we cannot stress enough how important these rehearsals are. As stated, opportunities to practice accompanied pieces at school can be limited, and for a pupil nervous enough about taking their exam, not having played with a piano or met their pianist before can only add to the stress of the day! Run-throughs will take place outside of school hours, and there is usually an additional charge of approximately £5. |
