How much does it cost to enter for an exam?

Unfortunately, entering your child in for an exam does come with some costs attached.

The cost of the exam is dependent on the Grade you are entering for.

Fees for 2012 are:

Prep Test:   £31.00
Grade 1:      £47.00
Grade 2:      £53.00
Grade 3:      £57.00
Grade 4:      £62.00
Grade 5:      £65.00

The fee that MfSF charge includes the Associated Board examination fee, the pianist fee for the day of the exam, the cost of a pre-examination run-through and a small administration fee. (You may choose to use your own pianist, in which case you can 'opt-out' when you complete the entry form and £10 will be deducted from the total fee).

You will also be expected to provide original music once the pieces for the exam have been chosen. It might be necessary to buy 3 or 4 additional books, which may cost between £5 and £15 each. Most books will have both instrument and piano parts. However, some books may require the purchase of additional piano music. Where possible, tutors are advised to suggest pieces from the same books in further grades.

Your tutor will advise you which books you need to buy. Ideally books need to be purchased as soon as your exam entry is made, so if you are unsure of what you need, you can either email your tutor or contact us for advice. Books can be ordered from www.normans.co.uk. The use of photocopies is strictly forbidden.

It may also be beneficial for the pupil to purchase recorded piano music, so that they can practice their complete performances at home. As not all tutors play or have access to a piano, these can be very valuable resources. They are available to download from www.youronlinepianist.com.
